Based on the true life story of Horace Mann School Professor Ion Theodore, Marathon by W. The heart of this debut novel is the mystery of how Ion’s life became entwined with that of Marianna Gardner, a disaffected New York City power broker who discovers his journals in a Greek monastery. From the Riverdale section of the Bronx, where the esteemed Horace Mann School is located, to a rundown nursing home in Queens, NY, to the ancient land of Greece where Ion Theodore was born a slave under the Ottoman Empire, this epic tale retraces Ion’s life as a former marathon runner and scholar. Marianna finds his journals in a Greek monastery in the village of Marathon, buried beneath a sculpture of a Madonna and Child and the mystery of his life—and hers—is revealed in stunningly beautiful journal entries.
Winokur’s recrafting of Ion’s journals illuminates one of the most devastating passages in world history. The entries recount how Ion won his freedom during World War I and disclose the celebrated love of his life, a young woman he reunites with in the aftermath of World War II.

Author W. William Winokur was a student of Ion Theodore at the Horace Mann School and, after his mentor’s death and in possession of some of Theodore’s poems and writings, returned to Greece in a personal quest for understanding and enlightenment. What he came to understand was that the “cycle of salvation,” evident in Ion Theodore’s life, was a story that must be told.
